Ndebele takes no prisoners on drag racers

Ndebele on Tuesday conveyed condolences to the families of the teenagers who were run over by two Mini Coopers dicing in the streets of Soweto on Monday.

Three other teenagers were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

"We want to convey our condolences to the families and friends of the four teenagers killed by two motorists who were allegedly drag racing in Soweto on Monday. We wish the injured a speedy recovery," he said.

"As mentioned at the national Road Safety Summit on 26 February 2010, we have called upon law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement against illegal drag racing.

"In certain provinces, there are already specialised task teams in place and special operations targeting illegal drag racing.

"We cannot dice with death and play games on our roads. Motorists who engage in such illegal activities must be apprehended and face the consequences of their actions," he said.

Ndebele said Road Accident Fund (RAF) officials would visit the bereaved families to provide the necessary assistance.

The Department of Transport has also dispatched a team of accident investigation and reconstruction specialists to assist in the investigation of the fatal crash.

One of the cars was allegedly driven by musician, Molemo Maarohanye well-known as Jub Jub.

Jub Jub and his friend were allegedly dicing in Mdlalose Street between Protea North and Protea Glen in Soweto at about 4pm. - BuaNews
