Tensions remain high at Bloemfontein taxi rank

Tensions remain high at Bloemfontein taxi rank

After almost two months, operators still refuse to use the R400-million multi-storey rank. They claim that the rank has just one exit point which causes congestion, especially during peak hours.

This makes it difficult for the estimated 2 500 taxis in and around Bloemfontein. For commuters who rely daily on taxis, life has become unbearable. Recently they were forced to wait several hours for transport.

The Mangaung Metropolitan municipality is hopeful of finding a lasting solution to the impasse. Further meetings are planned. Deputy Mayor of Mangaung Metro, Mxolisi Sionzana, says: “I will get that report on Monday and after that have a meeting on Tuesday. Based on the outcome of that meeting, it is only then that a decision will be taken on what to do”.

A huge police contingent has been deployed at the rank to defuse possible violent conflict.

This follows earlier reports that there was an attempt to burn the rank. While authorities plan their next move, commuters will remain on the receiving end.
