#RememberMandela

Today, the 5th of December 2014 marks the first anniversary of the death of former president Nelson Mandela at the age of 95 at his Houghton home in Johannesburg.

Everyone is urged to wear their favourite Mandela memorabilia and to share their memories of Madiba on the social media campaign, #RememberMandela. This includes “Where were you?”

08:00+:  There will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the Nelson Mandela statue on the lawns of the Union Buildings in Pretoria.  The nine-metre-tall bronze Mandela statue was unveiled on Reconciliation Day last year (16-12-13) – exactly one day after Madiba was buried at his rural Qunu home in the Eastern Cape.  Long-time comrade and close friend, Ahmed ‘Kathy’ Kathrada, is expected to lead/be among the freedom struggle veterans at the Union Buildings.  This wreath-laying ceremony will be open to all members of the public.  They can also visit the Union Buildings lay their own wreaths or flowers etc.

+-09:55 to +-13:30:  Government and the Nelson Mandela Foundation will hold an official memorial service for Madiba at the amphitheatre of the Freedom Park heritage site on Salvokop in Pretoria. About 500 guests are expected to attend.
