Friday, 23 March, as early as 07:00, senior citizens were amongst the first community members to make their way to Lereng Secondary School in Manyatseng near Ladybrand  for the Department of Communication’s Digital Migration awareness Imbizo. It is common on occasions like these for government entities to join forces to create awareness and bring services to the people.  DoC partnered with SABC, Post office, SASSA and SAPS to educate the community about their different service offerings and how these services benefit South Africa as a whole.

The event kick-started with Minister Faith Muthambi leading a political briefing at Mantsopa Local Municipality before heading for door- to- door visits in the township.  The highlight of the programme was at Lereng Secondary School Hall where Lesedi FM’s Tsolo Leokaoke was directing the programme. There was entertainment galore with performances by various local artists, including acclaimed Lesedi FM DJs, Lovers and Finzo.

Minister Muthambi  was warmly welcomed as she made her way to into the hall accompanied by the FS Legislature Speaker, Me Mamiki Qabathe, SABC Group Executive Technology, Mr Tshediso Raditabo, SABC Free State PGM, Mr Vincent Tsoenyane and Mantsopa Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Mamsie Tsoene , who in her welcoming speech, expressed her deepest gratitude to the Minister for choosing to visit Manyatseng.

Community members who have recently been connected with Set Top Boxes gave their testimonies with one stating that the Minister has offered her a bursary to further her studies next year.   The FS Speaker encouraged the community to boost the local economy by supporting local small businesses.

“I feel privileged that I am in this historic place of Mantsopa, named after one of our greatest African women and addressing you, the people of Mantsopa, during the Human Rights Month,” said Minister Muthambi as she touched on several challenges facing our country and how the government is addressing these matters. Digital Migration, access to information and connectivity were high on her agenda.

Five million disadvantaged South African households with television sets are earmarked to receive free Set Top Boxes (STBs) and free connectivity.  To date, throughout the nine provinces, a significant progress has been registered on this project that will bring more TV channels and radio stations to all and not only the few privileged.  The Minister called upon those earning R3200 and lower to go to their nearest Post Offices to apply for free STBs.
